Topic: Issue with available PAL Resolutions

Hi everyone,

I've just recently taken the plunge into building an arcade emulation setup using CRT Emudriver, VMMaker, Arcade OSD and RetroArch on an old i5-3330 Intel CPU, 8GB mem and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. For hardware I'm using:

- 21" JVC PAL CRT with scart from 1990
- Retro Upgrades VGA2Scart 15kHz converter
- 256MB Sapphire ATi Radeon HD2400

I've managed to solve a few teething problems but am stuck with trying to get a working modeline that fits the CRT.

I'm using the 'PAL CRT 50Hz 625 line" preset in VMmaker to generate the modelines but not all the modelines are available to select in Arcade OSD (or windows screen resolutions for that matter).

The only three modelines that will display and sync on the CRT are:
"512x478_50 15.62KHz 50.00Hz"
"544x242_50 15.60KHz 50.00Hz"
"640x200_50 15.60KHz 50.00Hz"

None of these modelines fill the screen leaving black bars top and bottom. I would have assumed that "768x576_50 15.62KHz 50.00Hz" would fill the screen but as mentioned above, but that modeline is not available.

I have tried toggling hide unsupported modelines in Arcade OSD to make them show, but I get a blank CRT when selected.

I've also noticed that once 'Install modes' has finished in VMMaker, the final output says:

'enabling \\.\DISPLAY11 : failed FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFE'

Display 11 is the CRT connected to the VGA output of the HD2400. Display 10 is the second monitor, an old 4:3 LCD connected to the DVI-I output.

Perhaps I'm missing something obvious? Apologies if I am, I'm somewhat new to to this and just having a crack at it. Appreciate any help and guidance.

Thanks!

Re: Issue with available PAL Resolutions

Hi,

Which guide have you used?

Your issue may reside here:

I'm using the 'PAL CRT 50Hz 625 line" preset

Unless you're only interested in emulation of PAL systems (or your TV is not 60-Hz-compatible, which is unlikely but I'd check your particular model, in case) I'd try with a reinstall following this to the letter:

Also, be aware that the graphics card you picked is far from optimal these days. Depending on what you want to emulate, upgrading is highly recommended before any attempt at making any installation.

Re: Issue with available PAL Resolutions

Hi Redcap,

Thanks for your reply.

That's the guide I followed, the one on this forum. I thought I followed it to the letter, but may have made a mistake I guess.

My CRT is a 50Hz PAL TV. I didn't think UK PAL consumer CRTs accepted 60Hz unless they were dual systems, PAL and NTSC? I did at first follow the guide above and follow the generic 15KHz instruction, but none of the modelines would sync. So I figured I'd try the PAL 625 line option in VMMmaker.

Thanks
